Tort Law

Tort (act or omission) is a civil wrong which causes a claimant to suffer losses or harm, and which can result into a legal liability for the person who commits the tortious act. The most common tort is known as the tort of negligence imposing an obligation to not breach the duty of care, meaning to behave like a reasonable person will.

Cyprus’ legal system is based on the common law, thereby inheriting England’s basic doctrines and structure. Tort law in Cyprus is one of the most active categories in civil law.  A tort is in most cases pursued in civil courts but in certain circumstances such as defamation, trespass or assault, a criminal prosecution is just as available.
